Nestled in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mérida—known as “The White City”—offers a perfect blend of colonial charm, Mayan heritage, vibrant culture, and modern amenities. If you’re considering relocating to this magnificent city or just visiting, you’re in for a treat with these unmissable attractions.
Plaza Grande (Main Square)

The beating heart of Mérida. This historic square dates back to the founding of the city in 1542 and remains the cultural and social center of Mérida to this day. Plaza Grande is surrounded by some of the city’s most iconic buildings, which are:
Casa de Montejo: This stunning 16th-century mansion was originally built for Francisco de Montejo, the Spanish conquistador who founded Mérida. Today, the building houses a free museum where visitors can explore beautifully preserved period rooms that display how Mérida’s elite lived during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with European furniture and decorative arts.
Palacio Municipal: The city Hall graces the southern edge of the plaza with its distinctive arched corridor and pink limestone construction. Built in the early 1900s, the building maintains the colonial aesthetic while incorporating elements of neoclassical design.

Palacio de Gobierno: Beyond its administrative function, this building houses a remarkable cultural treasure—spectacular murals by local artist Fernando Castro Pacheco that vividly depict Yucatán’s history.
Catedral de San Ildefonso: Built between 1561 and 1598, it stands as one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. The interior features soaring ceilings, beautiful altars, and a large crucifix known as “Cristo de la Unidad” that symbolizes reconciliation between indigenous peoples and European settlers.

Paseo de Montejo
A testament to Mérida’s prosperous past. This elegant, wide boulevard was constructed during the late 19th century when Yucatán was one of the wealthiest regions in Mexico.
The Monumento a la Patria (Monument to the Homeland) is the boulevard’s crowning jewel, created by Colombian sculptor Rómulo Rozo between 1943 and 1956.
Among the boulevard’s most magnificent structures is Palacio Cantón, a neoclassical mansion built in 1911, now housing the Regional Anthropology Museum.

The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya

Stands as one of Mérida’s most innovative cultural institutions, both architecturally and conceptually. Opened in 2012, this modern architectural marvel resembles a ceiba tree—sacred to the Maya as the connection between the underworld, earth, and sky. Inside, the museum houses over 1,100 meticulously preserved artifacts that comprehensively tell the story of Mayan civilization.
PARQUE ZOOLOGICO DEL CENTENARIO

The Park is divided into two main areas: a recreational area with gardens, games, restaurants and attractions such as the little train and the cable car; and another dedicated to the zoo, which includes areas for birds, reptiles, primates and other mammals.
Calle 60
Calle 60 has evolved into Mérida’s premier gastronomic corrido. This bustling street, once primarily residential, now hosts some of the city’s most beloved restaurants, cafés, and bars housed in restored colonial buildings with colorful facades and interior courtyards converted into dining spaces.
Parque Santiago

Anchored by the 16th-century Church of Santiago, Parque Santiago represents the heart of one of Mérida’s most traditional neighborhoods. The surrounding area comes alive each morning with a market where locals shop for fresh produce. The market building dates back to the early 20th century and contains numerous food stalls serving regional specialties.
Mérida’s charm lies not just in its attractions but in its people, pace of life, and unique cultural blend. As you explore these sites, take time to engage with locals, try new foods, and immerse yourself in the rhythm of this magical city.
